Agility Hacking
Surely becoming agile should be easier?!
agility
The ability to move quickly and easily, in our case associated with the delivery of software-based products using modern practices.hacking
Not as in unauthorised access to computer systems, but as in cutting into small bits, in our case to constantly improve the outcome.Who is this for?
Why take a look?
Those wanting to change their organisation. Those wanting to improve product delivery to help their company excel. Those wanting to transition to "agility", in other words Agile, Lean, and other modern delivery practices. Those that see a better way, and those that are just crazy enough to try to make it happen.
Whether it's your company, a company you work in or a company that you are helping transition and improve, this site is to help you.
We want to collectively document and share our experiences as an ongoing guidebook, making it available for anyone who wants to make this transformation to gain some clues on how to go about it.
Because every company and situation is different, no-one has seen all there is to see. However, by guiding on the approach and themes, but not the situational particulars this advice can be tailored… by you!
We truly hope that this helps you through your endeavour.
Attaining agility is hard
But why?
There's more to agility than Agile
Modern product delivery, or even just software delivery, involves more than adopting the industry standard Agile. There are a number of overlapping, complimentary spheres to also excel in, which contribute to a delivery capability that meets our business goals - DevOps, Cloud native architectures, engineering excellence, Product Thinking, Lean Startup approaches, and more.
Piecing together the right strategy from all available options is key to success.
Attaining is different from being
Attaining agility is rarely a case of just "doing agile" one day. Attaining agility is a systematic process of moving from where you are to a more agile state over time, taking some interesting diversions on the way.
This transition involves picking the right parts of a new way of working to apply at the right time. Your job is to figure out which steps to take when.
All the while demonstrating valuable change to your organisation and customers (that may sound familiar).
The missing manual
But you're in luck. Our goal is for this site to provide the guide that helps you piece together the strategy to attain agility, from your situation, in your environment.
This site provides the handbook that we wish we'd had when starting on our agile journeys.
Why do it at all?
It's never agility for agility's sake
Your company doesn't want agility, but it may want the outcomes that agility can offer
MAKE YOUR CUSTOMERS AWESOME
MINIMISE RISK - MARKET, FINANCIAL, EXECUTION
BUSINESS ADAPTABILITY
SPEED AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
So how do we do it?
What do you need to do?
Caveat: this may not fit your circumstances, but from our experience it fits a lot of situations, more than people think on first assessment. This site offers a high-level approach to the work needed to transition to modern ways of working. Use it as a guide for how to break things down into manageable chunks. We hope you find it useful.1Understand your company's goals and ambitions
Building on the generic business goals, understand your company's specific ambitions and where you can help. Be clear on your purpose.
2Define your first North Star
Consider what needs to be in place to deliver on the company's ambitions. What does your world need to look like in the future?
3Understand the game you are playing
Moving towards the North Star involves playing an organisational game. Understand the goals of that game, the rules, some strategies.
4Understand the 5 phases
We've broken up the journey into 5 phases. Take a look. You may be starting on step 1 or step 3. No two journeys are the same but themes emerge across all of them.
5Tailor each phase
Starting with your first phase, as you approach each one, tailor it to your situation and goals.
